Government


The federal president is ceremonial head of state, directly elected for up to two six-year terms. The federal chancellor heads the council of ministers and is nominally appointed by the president from the strongest party in the National Council (Nationalrat), elected by a form of proportional representation for four years, and a 63-member Federal Council (Bundesrat) elected by the republic's nine provinces.
