Government
Only now is the traditional highly
centralised French government taking timid steps in power devolution
by introducing reforms to meet regional demand for autonomy. Much
real power is still in the hands of the of the graduates of the notable
grandes écoles which hold many key posts in the civil service and
at the top of public and private agencies and corporations. Class
divisions are strong and wealth is unevenly distributed. There are
growing racial tension within French society marked by the development
of the far-right National Front party. Immigrants constitute 10% of
the labour force. Despite this however, there seem to be the development
of increasing consensus between the mainstream parties of the right
and the left making cohabitation between right and left wing governments
possible.
