Italy has a president that is basically the ceremonial head of state, elected for seven years by members of parliament and region representatives. The president nominates the prime minter. A form of proportional representation elects the two-chamber parliament for five years; the Chamber of Deputies has 630 members and the Senate 315 members plus five life members nominated by the president and two former presidents of the republic.
