Government
The
presedent of the Federal Council is head of state, elected for one
year by the parliament from members of the Federal Council (cabinet).
This seven-member council is elected for fours years by parliament,
and exercises executive power. The two chamber federal assembly
comprises the 200-member National Chamber directly elected by proportional
representation for four years, and the 46-member National Council
representing the various cantons.
Each of the 23 cantons has its own parliament and government.
